Theta Criterion: Every argument, e.g., NP, in a sentence must receive one and only one thematic role (e.g., agent, experiencer, theme, patient, goal, beneficiary); each thematic role associated with a theta-assigner (typically a verb) must be assigned to one and only one argument.
