A stop is a manner of articulation, a consonant where air is held back when uttering it.

Comments

In a more precise phonetic terminology, stops also include noncontinuant nasals, like [m], [n], [ɲ], or [ŋ]. The phonologist's stop is the phoneticians plosive or explosive.

Examples found in English
