Term used in auditory word recognition. Recognition tasks are either on-line or off-line: the task is called off-line when the subject has ample time to think about what word he has heard. Then he can say or write down which word he thinks to have heard.

Example

The gating technique is an off-line technique to test auditory word recognition.
