All Glottopedia articles should be categorized, as in the Wikipedia. All category names are in English, Glottopedia's default language.

There are four classes of categories (A-D). Each article should belong to one category of the classes A, B, and C (multiple categorization is possible in class C). In addition, each article can belong to any number of categories of class D.

Category class A: Languages: The language in which the article is written (two-letter abbreviation according to ISO 639).

Category:En (English)
Category:De (German)

Category class B: Article type

Category:DICT (Dictionary articles)
Category:BIOG (Biographical articles)
Category:LANG (Language articles)
Category:SURV (Survey articles)
Category:LING (Research articles)

Major categories can be assigned using templates.

Category class C: Major categories: The linguistic domain, the article refers to.

Here are some examples for major categories (a complete list can be found under Major categories):

acquisition
bilingualism
computational linguistics
diachrony
discourse analysis
lexicography
logic
morphology
onomastics
philosophy of language
phonetics and phonology
pragmatics
psycholinguistics
quantitative linguistics
semantics
sociolinguistics
syntax
writing

Category class D: Special categories

Special categories subdivide a major category. Up to now, Glottopedia has not come up with guidelines for special categories.
