General linguistics

General linguistics is the study of human language in general, disregarding the differences between different languages (in this it contrasts with descriptive linguistics).

Comments

The term theoretical linguistics is often used in a very similar way. However, language-particular (i.e. non-general) linguistics is typically a highly theoretical enterprise as well.
