The adjective free is used as a technical term or a component of a technical term in several ways:
- free (in binding theory)
- free form (vs. bound form)
- free indirect style
- free morpheme
- free state (in Semitic noun phrases, as opposed to construct state)
- free stress (= stress is on different syllables in different words)
- free variation
- free word order (= word order is determined by pragmatic conditions)
